How to Choose Brushless Motors for Your FPV Drone

The motor decides how your drone flies. Three numbers matter most: stator size, KV and the battery voltage you plan to run.

1. Match motor size to prop size

  • 2–3" builds: 1103–1404 motors, 1S–4S.
  • 5" freestyle and racing: 2306–2207 motors, 4S–6S.
  • 7" long range: 2806.5–2812 motors, 4S–6S.
  • 9–12" heavy lift: 3115–4215 motors, 6S–12S.

2. Pick KV for your voltage

KV is RPM per volt with no load. Higher voltage means lower KV: a typical 5" motor is about 1700–2000KV on 6S and 2400–2700KV on 4S. Large propellers want low KV and high torque.

3. Check the specifications

Look at maximum current and power, then make sure your ESC can handle it with a margin. Check the mounting pattern (16×16, 19×19, 30×30) and the shaft thread (M5 or M6) before you order.

4. Mind the weight

Lighter motors respond faster; heavier ones are usually tougher. For long range pick efficiency, for freestyle pick durability.
